Bennet's Blog

Hi, everyone. First, let me introduce myself: I'm Bennet William Antonitis. This is my blog to keep those interested in how things are going in my life. Thanks to all of you who take the time to stop in and check on me. (I need lots of that right now, as I'm still not very self-sufficient just yet.) I don't know how often I'll be able to keep this blog updated as I'm very busy these days. I had gotten quite used to 9 months of hanging out at my private spa and really relaxing most of my day. These days, there's lots more to keep me busy, what with sleeping and eating and pooping and such. But for now, I wanted to pass on the basics of my first few days here in Chicago and let you know how I've been doing. Thanks again for your interest.

By the way, if this is your first time here, you might want to start at the bottom of the page on my birthday.

May 19, 2007

OK. This is officially my last entry. Turns out, I'm way too young to be a blogger. I just don't have the time to devote to updating my blog on a regular basis, what with all the time I'm spending sleeping and eating and such.

So here's my last update: I'm rolling over now! Mommy and Daddy are excited, but Mommy's already preparing to have to keep a closer eye on me as I begin to become mobile. I haven't started solids yet, but Mommy expects that I will be some time in my 6th month.

I'm a great sleeper - meaning I sleep a LOT. It puts a crimp in Mommy's social schedule, but I'm much happier when I get my naps in.

March 10, 2007

Mommy said that I should probably update my blog or people will be wondering what's happened to me. So it's been a couple months, and there have been a couple significant developments. The biggest one is that Mommy quit her "old" job to do her "new" job (being my Mommy) full time. It was a tough decision for her, but she's very excited about the new adventures that lie ahead of us.

Other than that, it's been the typical things you'd expect from a baby. I've gotten bigger - 10 pounds 11 ounces at my two month doctor's visit. That's in the 50th percentile for my age. I'm starting to hold my head up when Mommy puts me on my tummy, but I still hate tummy time. It's really no fun. Mommy and Daddy say I'm sleeping pretty well. (I think I'm sleeping fine, too.) I usually go to bed around 6 and wake up between 6 and 7 with one "midnight snack" in between.

Mommy's always taking my picture Daddy says Mommy's gonna' blind me with all the flashes. She posts them whenever she gets a chance, so you should check them out.

Well, it's official: I'm out of the woods. Today my bilirubin was down to 11.2. So since it's still going down without the light therapy, I no longer have to get tested. Thank goodness... my little heels were taking quite a little beating.

Thanks to everyone who was thinking of me during my first illness. Hopefully it will be a while before I have another.

January 3, 2007

Woo hoo! My bilirubin is down to 12.2! That's a drop of 5.5 points! I think the 2 dirty diapers last night is what did it for me. I still need to go back to the doctor tomorrow to make sure it's still going down, but things are looking great. And the best news of all: I don't have to wear the light blanket any more! Yeah! More time with Mommy and Daddy!

January 2, 2007

Back to the doctor again. My bilirubin actually went up! Now it's up to 17.7! Good news is that as I get older the number isn't as worrisome. So while a 17.7 would have been very scary when I was 2 days old, now that I'm 5 days old it's not super scary. But I do need to continue with the light therapy. Also, I haven't had a dirty diaper in 2 days now, so once I get my bowels moving, the doctor hopes that things will get better.

Happy New Year! Went back to the doctor today. My bilirubin is down... barely. It's 17.4, down from 17.5 yesterday. So I'll need to go back again tomorrow. I also need to stay under the light blanket and keep taking a bottle of formula with each feeding.

December 31, 2006

Well, today was my first New Year's Eve. During the day Mommy and Daddy took me to the pediatrician's office. (How cool is that that they're open on New Year's Eve!) They did another bilirubin test and my number didn't go down - in fact, it went up to 17.5 (from 11.5 yesterday). My doctor was a little concerned, so she ordered a photo therapy blanket to be delivered to our house this afternoon

The man came to deliver it around 2 pm. Isn't that cool, too? All these people working on New Year's Eve to make sure I'm OK! However, the blanket is not cool. It's a flexible piece of plastic with a bunch of fiberoptics in it that light up. It has to be wrapped around my mostly naked body (I get to wear my diaper). I'm supposed to stay under it as much as possible, which means Mommy and Daddy basically only let me out to change me and feed me. I'm not really crazy about it and Mommy and Daddy don't really like that they haven't been able to hold me much. But they're more concerned that I get better, so I'm pretty much stuck here. I'm making the best of it.

One other first for me today... the doctor requested that I get supplemented with formula following my feedings to make sure I'm getting enough to eat (bilirubin gets out through my diaper). So I got my first bottle today. Wow, does that make eating easier... I think I'm gonna' like this!

December 30, 2006

Today it was time to go home from the hospital. I was pretty excited. But before we left, I had a couple more things to take care of. I got my picture taken and I sent Mommy and Daddy to one final baby care class and Mommy gave me my first manicure so that I'll stop scratching up my face. My doctor came to visit me, too. She said I was looking a little yellow, so she ordered a test called a Bilirubin test to make sure I don't have jaundice. My doctor thought my bilirubin level was a little too high (11.5), so she asked Mommy and Daddy to bring me in for my first appointment tomorrow instead of waiting until Tuesday. They just want to make sure it starts going down.

We finally left the hospital around 4 pm. Daddy was funny struggling with my carseat. Mommy and Daddy thought they were all ready, but they hadn't put me in it yet and I was too small for the straps the way they were, so it took Daddy some figiting to get it to my size. Still, I needed some extra protection, which came in the form of a rolled up towel.

When we finally got home, Mommy was anxious to get everything into her bedroom. She still is pretty immobile (she's still pretty sore and her feet have swollen to twice their normal size), so she wanted to keep me in her room with her so that she wouldn't have to walk up and down the stairs to get to me. So Daddy went to work turning their bedroom into something that sort of resembled our hospital room. It's now got a place for me to sleep, get fed, get changed, and get cleaned. It's great!

The rest of the day Mommy and Daddy pretty much just held me and fed me and settled into being home with me. I've gotta' say, I think I'm going to like this place.

December 29, 2006

Today was mostly a day of recovery. Mommy recovered from labor. I recovered from my birth. And Daddy recovered from his first baby-induced sleepless night. I was up quite a bit last night. I just couldn't sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time. This being out in the world is going to take some getting used to.

We also got a visit from Grandma and Granpa Antonitis, Great Aunt Terry, and Great-grandma and Great-grandpa Osinski.

I also had some tests and screenings done. All in all, it was a long day... but not as long as yesterday.

December 28, 2006

Today was a very busy day. It was my birthday after all. Last night Mommy was admitted to the hospital to get ready to deliver me. She was expecting me last week, but I really wanted to wait until after the new year before making my grand entrance. However, Mommy's doctor had other plans and so Mommy was induced this morning. They gave her Pitocin around 9:30 am to get her started. She wasn't that far along (about 2 cm) and was only slightly further (4 cm) at 10:30 am. Even though she wasn't very dialated, her contractions were only about 2 minutes apart, were lasting about a minute, and had become pretty painful.

So even though she wasn't that far along, since her contractions were so close together, she decided that it was time for the epidural. It took a few tries to get the epidural right (Mommy apparently has a mild case of scoliosis, which made it hard for the doctor to get it just right), but the third time was the charm and Mommy was very happy that Dr. Moon was patient and kept trying until she got it right. After that, Mommy couldn't feel a thing and actually slept (kinda') for the next two hours. Meanwhile, Daddy, who had been at Mommy's side the whole time, went to get some food. By 3 pm, Mommy was fully dialated and ready to bring me into the world, but things didn't really get going until about 3:15. That's when she actually started pushing.

After having dialated so fast, everyone thought that this wouldn't take much longer... they were wrong. You see, I have a rather large head (though Daddy says it looks just fine compared to the rest of my body), which made it take a little longer for me to make my grand debut. So it took a little longer than Mommy and me wanted, but luckily we had a really great nurse (Nurse Kimberly) who help Mommy through all of it, not to mention Daddy, who was always ready with a cool towel for Mommy's head.

I officially arrived at 6:05 pm on December 28th, 2006. I weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces, was 21 inches long, and had a 14 3/4 inch head (I told you it was rather large). After they cleaned me up, Mommy and Daddy and I spent a few hours recovering. (Mommy had had a long day and the last few hours had not been terribly fun for me, either.) Then we got to move the Mother Baby room, where Grannie Gilliland and Aunt Amanda came to visit us.
